Emergency Signs in a Newborn Baby
Emergency Conditions
- Hypothermia: Body temperature less than 96.6°F.
- No chest movement while breathing or bluish discoloration of lips and tongue.

Breathing problems: No breathing or severe respiratory distress with
respiratory rate more than 60/min, nasal flaring, chest retractions, grunting,
gasping or head bobbing.

Baby’s colour becomes mottled, pale or bluish, or baby becomes
unconscious or has seizures.
Priority Warning Signs
- Refusal to feed.
- Abdominal distention or bile-stained vomiting.
- Severe jaundice.
- Severe pallor.
- Bleeding from any site (except normal vaginal bleeding in female newborn).
- Low birth weight (less than 1800 grams).
- Very large baby (more than 4000 grams).
- Redness around umbilical cord area with or without pus discharge.
