Emergency Signs in a Newborn Baby

Emergency Conditions

  • Hypothermia: Body temperature less than 96.6°F.
  • No chest movement while breathing or bluish discoloration of lips and tongue.
  • Breathing problems: No breathing or severe respiratory distress with respiratory rate more than 60/min, nasal flaring, chest retractions, grunting, gasping or head bobbing.
  • Baby’s colour becomes mottled, pale or bluish, or baby becomes unconscious or has seizures.

Priority Warning Signs

  • Refusal to feed.
  • Abdominal distention or bile-stained vomiting.
  • Severe jaundice.
  • Severe pallor.
  • Bleeding from any site (except normal vaginal bleeding in female newborn).
  • Low birth weight (less than 1800 grams).
  • Very large baby (more than 4000 grams).
  • Redness around umbilical cord area with or without pus discharge.
