Dealing With a Sleepy Newborn
- Due to excessive sleeping baby, mother will have difficulty in waking the baby for feeds. The baby sucks but not feed vigorously. The baby will have decreased urine amount and stool frequency.
- Mother should position the baby properly and ensure good attachment. Mother and the baby should be together skin to skin. Baby should not be over clothed leaving hand free. KMC bag is good for establishing breastfeed and for continuation and increment of breast milk volume. If KMC is done for 2 week religiously, the mother will rarely need help of any commercial artificial milk powder or any animal milk.
- Feed the baby early once the baby gives feeding clues like licking lips or smacking, sucking of hands, lips, toes, clothes, toys and fingers, opening and closing the mouth, sticking the tongue out and moving the head from side to side as if looking for something.
- Mother should wake the baby to feed after every 3 hour.
- Cup feeding small amount of colostrum to provide calories and prevent hypocaloric state. Mother should express the milk for early milk production.
